Georgians Women convincingly win the Thunder Cup at Old Trafford by 8 wickets

Georgians Women won the Thunder Cup at Old Trafford yesterday, convincingly beating Leigh by 8 wickets.

Having lost the toss the girls put in a superb bowling and fielding performance to bowl out Leigh for a lowly 92. Holly Batey (2 for 8 from 6) and Rhia Sedha led from the front with Batey getting the key wicket of Ellie Mason smartly caught behind by Skye Thomas.

Amelia Sammons ( 3-20) and Daisy Cooke kept up the momentum before the spin of Neve Boon ( 0-11 from 8) , Amelie Batey (3-15 from 9) and Gaby McKeever (2-4) cleaned up the tail.

After the break and roared on by a health Cromley Road crowd, Georgians set about chasing down a total of just 92. Captain Tess Bailey and Skye Thomas set off as though they had a train to catch and were 27 in the fourth over before Thomas was unlucky to have been given out LBW for 15. Bailey was joined by Hannah Wilke who together moved the score on to 37 before Bailey was bowled whilst sweeping for 18. After that there were no further wickets as Wilke (46not out) and Amelia Sammons (13 not out) reached the target from just 17 overs. Wilke, just 14 years of age, picked up the player of the match award for her terrific 46 from 36, a knock including 8 boundaries.

The team was then presented with the Thunder Cup by ex- Lancashire legend John Abrahams before the celebrations began and the corks started to pop!

It was a fabulous end to the season and a Georgians day out that will live long into the memory. Having had an U13 team that won at this fantastic stadium in 1979 Georgians now proudly remain unbeaten, 2 from 2!
Hopefully it won't be 46 years before a Georgians team get another opportunity to defend this record.

The club would like to thank everyone that came along to support the team but particularly to the coaches ( Ben Staniforth, Steve Boon ) and scorer (Alexis Batey).
